Teen Counselling FAQs

How do I know if my teenager needs therapy?

There are several signs that your teenager may benefit from therapy services, including changes in their mood or behaviour, difficulty concentrating, lack of motivation, decreased interest in activities, withdrawal from family and friends, and persistent feelings of anxiety or sadness. If you are concerned about your teenager's well-being, it may be helpful to schedule an initial consultation call with a therapist or psychologist to discuss their concerns.

What can my teenager expect in therapy sessions?

During counselling sessions, your teenager can expect to have a safe and confidential space to talk about their concerns and feelings without fear of judgment. Their therapist will work with them to identify their goals and develop a plan to address their challenges. Depending on their needs, they may learn coping strategies, stress management techniques, and communication skills to improve their relationships and overall well-being.

Will I be involved in my teenager's therapy sessions?

The involvement of parents or caregivers in their teenager's therapy sessions can vary depending on their needs and goals. In some cases, it may be helpful for parents to participate in all or some of the sessions. However, in other cases, it may be more beneficial for the teenager to have a private and confidential space to work through their challenges.

Will my teenager's therapist keep conversations confidential?

Yes, your teen's therapist will keep their conversations confidential, with the exception of certain circumstances where they are legally or ethically required to disclose information, such as if they believe your teenager is at risk of harming themselves or others. Your teenager's therapist or psychologist will discuss the limits of confidentiality during their first session.

How long does therapy for teenagers typically last?

The duration of therapy for teens can vary depending on their unique needs and goals. Some teenagers may see significant improvements after just a few sessions, while others may benefit from longer-term therapy. Your teen's therapist will work with them to determine the best treatment plan and timeline based on their individual needs.

How do I find a therapist or psychologist for my teenager?

At Core Psychology we have several therapists who specialize in working with teens. In all cases, comfort and fit are an important part of the therapy process. It can be helpful to schedule an initial consultation to get a sense of the therapist's style and determine if they are a good fit for your teen, and feel comfortable to you as their parent. Give us a call. We are happy to help you navigate this process to pair you up with the right fit.
